Ravenna
I went to Italy in 1954 as a student. We toured around Tuscany and ended up at Ravenna for a few days and looked at all the mosaics there. We went to a School of Mosaics where the students were learning the techniques of mosaicing and I was quite inspired. In those days I had no idea how to get started so I forgot about it all my life and promised myself I would do it when I retired. Now I wish I had done it earlier. In 1991 I retired and someone gave me some buckefuls of old tesserae which needed washing and sorting but I didn't do anything about it until 1997 when I went on a course in Broadstairs run by Martin Cheek. Since then I have made several kits and a few original mosaics. It is a bit of trouble to get started but once I set up I find it really good and very enjoyable.
